National Police week

National Police week began in 1970 as a way for police to connect with their communities and increase awareness about services they provide. Community policing is at the heart of police week, as it’s an opportunity for police and community members to get know each other.

Here at Higgins Insurance, we have started a new education series on some professionals who work in different fields. We will be highlighting them throughout this year and they will range from correctional officers, social workers, doctors, 911 operators, police, nurses, education support staff, arts, housekeepers, etc. If you would like to be featured, please let us know by email.

Our goal is to inspire our youth so they can learn more about different professions, as well as to showcase the amazing people that perform those jobs in the Maritimes.

Here is our interview with Mary Henderson of the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force.

Why did you become a Police Officer?

I became a Police Officer to help people in my community. I am a lifelong resident of the area and enjoy helping those in my community.

What has been your most rewarding aspect of your profession?

To be able to work in the community in which I grew up in has been very rewarding. Seeing the difference one person can make in the capacity as a Police Officer is truly amazing and is very rewarding.

What do you say to people who want to become a Police Officer?

People will often tell me that they want to become a Police Officer and I fully encourage them to do it. I tell them it is the best job ever and that I absolutely love it… I would do it for free, but don’t tell the Chief.

Leave us with a fun fact about your occupation?

We have a unique job in that our coworkers are truly like a second family.

Here is our interview with Jason Murray of the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force.

Why did you become a Police Officer?

I became a police officer because I really like working with the public and the opportunity came at the right time and it was a great career choice for me and my family.

What has been your most rewarding aspect of your profession?

The most rewarding aspect of my profession is to have been able to make some positive changes in certain people’s lives and the opportunity to have the flexibility to coach judo, jujitsu and high school football in our community.

What do you say to people who want to become a Police Officer?

When people express interest to me about policing I always look forward to help them in any way I can. I always make sure and explain the pros and cons of the job and believe it is a great career choice with demand is getting higher for new officers.

Leave us with a fun fact about your occupation

My fun fact about being a police officer is working together with my coworkers solving crime and dealing with the public which can be very fulfilling. We have our own way of dealing with things together which some people would not understand but it helps us get by difficult times and it makes them like an extended family to me.
