National EMS (Emergency Medical Service) Week

May 19th is National EMS (Emergency Medical Service) week.  EMS week brings together local communitiesand medical personnel to honour the dedication of those who provide the day to day lifesaving on the front lines. This is an opportunity to educate the public on the role of Emergency Medical Technicians and learn from their experiences.
Here at Higgins Insurance, we have started a new education series on some professionals who work in different fields. We will be highlighting them throughout this year and they will range from correctional officers, social workers, doctors, 911 operators, police, nurses, education support staff, arts, housekeepers, etc. If you would like to be featured, please let us know by email.

Our goal is to inspire our youth so they can learn more about different professions, as well as to showcase the amazing people that perform those jobs in the Maritimes.

Here is our interview with Benoit Savoie! Thank You

Why did you become a Paramedic?

I became a Paramedic after doing a ride along with one of my friends that was a Paramedic at the time. I remember perfectly well that day! It was July 25th, 1998. We were doing a night shift and we had 6 calls that night! I fell in love with the profession right away…I liked every aspect of it!  The day after, I was enrolled to take my Paramedic course. I had never thought of becoming a Paramedic before that day…my studies were in computer sciences, way far from the Paramedic field!

What has been your most rewarding aspect of your profession?

The most rewarding aspect of my profession is when you are able to help someone that really needs our help. I certainly believe that most of the people in this profession are there to help others. When you are able to do that and you receive positive feedback from the patients, their families or other people, you feel that your duties were fulfilled completely.

What do you say to people who want to become a Paramedic?

I would certainly say that it’s a beautiful profession (well, to me, the best!). It’s a very challenging profession and very rewarding. Anyone that wants to help others, want to make a change in people’s life and like the medical field, paramedicine is for you!

Leave us with a fun fact about your occupation!

There are always some fun facts with our profession (like any other professions). However, one thing that we get often is when the patient is on the stretcher and we need to go up and down with it. We often have the patient say: please don’t drop me (or something similar). We often say: so far, we didn’t drop anyone else today…you should be good!  That always brings some laughter’s and put some positive in stressful times.

Thank You Benoit for the interview, we appreciate the difference you make and often the unseen work you do!
