Our goal is to inspire our youth so they can learn more about different professions, as well as to showcase the amazing people that perform these jobs in the Maritimes.
Here is our interview with Paula Doucet! Thank You.
Why did you become a Nurse?
I knew from a very early age that I wanted to be a Registered Nurse. My mom still has a picture I drew in grade 1 when asked what we wanted to be when we grew up, and I drew a picture of a Nurse. I was always the type that would take care of everybody, and everything, so it made perfect sense for me to become a Registered Nurse.
What has been your most rewarding aspect of your profession?
There are so many instances in my past 23 years that have been rewarding on both a professional and personal level. As a bedside nurse of 19 years I have had the opportunity to be part of many joyous and sad events that have enabled me to appreciate the importance of good health, family and friends, courage and conviction, and the resilience of the human spirit. In my most recent role as NBNU Provincial President, it is a privilege to represent 6900 unionized Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners. It would be difficult to point out one rewarding aspect, since I feel there are so many….
What do you say to people who want to become a Nurse?
I would encourage anyone considering becoming a Registered Nurse to follow through and pursue it. Being a Registered Nurse has so many opportunities to offer and despite it being an emotionally and physically tasked profession, the satisfaction of knowing you made a difference is someone’s life outweighs any negative aspect. Nursing is universal, you could go anywhere and do just about anything as a Registered Nurse, the sky is the limit, literally as a flight nurse.
Leave us with a fun fact about your occupation?
There are many fun facts about being a Registered Nurse. I will share two fun facts about us, we have a very unique sense of humour (some may even say a sick sense of humour), and when nurses meet someone for the first time, we automatically check out their veins for potential IV access.
