Christmas Fire Safety Starts With Your Smoke Alarms

The following holiday fire safety tips are provided by local fire prevention expert Arthur Willins to help families stay safe during the busy Christmas season.

The Christmas season is a time for twinkling lights, cozy gatherings, festive cooking, and warm family moments. But it is also one of the busiest and most dangerous times of year for house fires.

With decorations plugged in, ovens running longer, fireplaces roaring, and candles glowing, the risk of fire increases significantly during the holidays. That is why one of the simplest and most important safety steps you can take this season is making sure your smoke alarms are working properly.

Here is your quick holiday smoke alarm safety checklist to help keep your home and family protected this Christmas.

Test Your Smoke Alarms Monthly

Use the test button on every smoke alarm in your home at least once a month and especially before holiday guests arrive. If you do not hear a loud, clear alarm, it is time for maintenance or replacement.

This quick 10 second task can give you critical early warning in an emergency.

Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years

Smoke alarms do not last forever. Even if they still beep when tested, they must be fully replaced after 10 years including wired in units.

Check the back of your alarm for the manufacture date. If it is past the 10 year mark, replace it now. It is one of the lowest cost upgrades you can make for life safety.

Never Remove the Batteries

Many modern smoke alarms come with a hush button that temporarily silences nuisance alarms caused by steam or cooking. Always use the hush button instead of removing the battery.

If your alarm is chirping, that is a low battery warning, not a malfunction. Replace the battery immediately. If the unit has a sealed, non replaceable battery and begins chirping, replace the entire alarm.

Install Alarms on Every Level of Your Home

For full protection, smoke alarms should be installed:

  • On every level of your home

  • Outside each sleeping area

  • In the basement

For even greater safety, consider interconnected smoke alarms. These ensure that if one alarm sounds say in the basement all alarms throughout the home activate at once. This early warning system is especially critical at night.

Interconnection can be achieved through:

  • Hard wired systems

  • Modern wireless interconnect technology

Why Early Detection Is More Important Than Ever

Today’s homes burn much faster than older homes due to modern building materials and furnishings. In many cases, you may have less than three minutes to escape safely after a fire starts.

That makes early smoke detection absolutely critical. A working alarm can be the difference between a safe escape and disaster.
