During the next few months, we at Higgins Insurance will be starting a series of posts promoting buying local in our Maritime Communities. We hope to spread the word and encourage people to support local maritime farmers and businesses. Local businesses enhance our communities’ vibrancy and creates connections within our community.
Today we are proud to share an interview with Bates Barn and Bates Landing.
What kinds of events do you host in your newly built barn?
Bates Barn was established in 1946 by the Bates Family and was used to house animals, hay and equipment over the years. We purchased the barn in the early 80’s and in the 90’s hosted an annual corn boil/barn dance for the community. This was an annual event until 2011 when we began hosting weddings which proved to be successful.
The original barn was the victim of arson in 2017 and a new Bates Barn was built and continued its success with weddings and events such as community fundraisers, dances, corporate events, funeral service & receptions & concerts. With the magnificent view of the Belleisle Bay and the majestic construction of the barn, it has become one of the top wedding venues in Southern NB. Visit our website at www.batesbarn.ca.
What kind of crops do you grow?
The Bates Farm is what Bob jokes as being a “mixed up” farm. We grow vegetables, small fruit and have a cow-calf beef operation. We offer fresh produce in season at our roadside market, Bates Landing, as well as several U-Pick operations on our farm to include strawberries, raspberries, corn, apples & pumpkins.
Where do you sell your crops?
Our in-season produce can be found at Bates Landing, some Sobeys stores, Jamie’s Independent Grocer in Hampton, Cochran’s Country Market in Rothesay as well as the Kingston Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings.
Our son Steve started a Honeycrisp apple orchard in 2015 which is popular in the fall along with the U-Pick Pumpkin patch.
Where are you located?
We are located along the Belleisle Bay in Long Point/Kiersteadville.
